Welcome to Chickie-ChickieBees! I’m thrilled to blog about my flock of chickens and beekeeping. I live in a Northern climate where the weather can be terribly hot in June, July, and August, and then it’s wintery cold from November to April. Every year that I tend to my bees and chickens I learn something new about getting them through the winter freezing temps and then getting through the hot summer months. And I love telling people about it. My family has heard me talk quite a bit about my chickens.
So, I thought it would be fun to share all my experiences about my flock and my bee colonies. It started with an idea that my husband announced one day: “let’s get some chickens.” I was surprised and thrilled! So, we started looking into the different breeds and color eggs that they lay.
A year later, I started a bee colony. I fell in love with beekeeping instantly. The buzzing of the hive was magically soothing. I was in awe of the bees moving around in the hive and worker together to keep their colony thriving. I read a ton of books to understand why they do what they do. I lost my bees over the winter and started a few more colonies the following Spring. I learned from the mistakes I made and now manage the bees well. Beekeeping can be simple if you’re diligent with some upkeep and inspections throughout the different seasons.
I’ll share some “how to” blogs that can be helpful, and some stories that will be entertaining.
